ATNZE (Association of Taiwan Net Zero Emissions) and JCCS (Japan CCS Co., Ltd.) have long maintained the exchange and excellent cooperation in the promotion of technologies related to CCUS (Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage). To help enterprises with an in-depth understanding of the actual operations of Tomakomai CCS Demonstration Project, ATNZE and TCCSUA (Taiwan Carbon Capture Storage and Utilization Associations) specifically arranged for member enterprises to form delegates and visit the Tomakomai CCS site recently with an in-depth exchange of opinions and experience.

JCCS (Japan CCS Co., Ltd.) was founded by large companies called by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) of Japan in May 2008 with professional knowledge in CCS related fields in Japan. The main services include the ground survey and evaluation of proper CO2 storage site, large CO2 emission source capture and processing research, CCS technology promotion and educational promotion. JCCS has long been committed to CCS technology development to cope and solve global warming problems. The CCS Demonstration Project located in Tomakomai, Hokkaido was launched in April 2012, and underwent well boring, observation well, and well injection infrastructure and related monitoring equipment installation, before storing CO2 in 2016. By 2019, the storage capacity of 300,00 tons was accomplished.

During this visit, Jiro Tanaka explained the research technology and outcome of Tomakomai demonstration project. Jiro Tanaka indicated that the critical outcome of the project proves the safety and reliance of CCS technology. The project development process takes high value on the maintenance of public relation and the instant and transparent information disclosure enhances public cognition and acceptance. Hence, the project is widely supported by the local communicates and related stakeholders. Additionally, Yoshihiro Sawada explained the subsequent planning of the project in brief and the future R&D in CO2 vessel transport and carbon recycling project. Finally, Hsiao-Kan Ma expressed that this visit is significantly meaningful for both parties with great rewards. The research outcome of Tomakomai project could be taken into consideration by Taiwan in net zero actions and the intense exchange between Taiwan and Japan is expected to meet the net zero emission goals.
