The Ministry of Environment released its latest "National Greenhouse Gas Inventory Report" at 3rd, June. Taiwan's net greenhouse gas emissions in 2024, after deducting carbon sinks, stood at 251.404 million metric tons of CO2e—a 6.59% decrease compared to the 2005 base year. This marks the third consecutive year of declining emissions for Taiwan, outperforming the global trend of a 2.3% annual increase. Notably, the "Energy Sector," which accounts for over 90% of national emissions, saw a 1.07% decrease compared to the base year for the first time since the enforcement of the Greenhouse Gas Reduction and Management Act.
Minister of Environment Peng Chi-ming stated that the national carbon reduction target is a 28±2% reduction by 2030 compared to the base year. Although the 2025 data will not be released until next year, current projections estimate a reduction of around 9%, slightly lower than the original 10% target. This is primarily due to strong economic growth last year, which led to factory expansions and increased electricity consumption.
The Ministry highlighted three major successes in this report: First, while global emissions rose by 2.3%, Taiwan's total emissions fell by 1.76% and net emissions decreased by 1.92% year-on-year. Second, Taiwan has successfully "decoupled economic growth from carbon emissions." Over the past two decades, real GDP grew by 93.13%, while CO2 emissions intensity dropped by 48.59%, making Taiwan one of only 35 economies globally to achieve this decoupling trend. Third, for the first time, emissions from all four major sectors dropped below base-year levels, demonstrating structural progress in carbon reduction.
