📉 Global Decarbonization Standards Upgrade: The Countdown for ICE Vehicles Begins
The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), the world’s most authoritative carbon reduction certification body, recently released its "Land Transport Standard" draft for automotive manufacturers (OEMs). This new standard is more than a technical specification; it is an ultimatum for industrial transformation. For the first time, it explicitly requires automakers to establish concrete timelines for the "phase-out of Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) vehicles" to align with the 1.5°C pathway of the Paris Agreement.
🚗 Targeting Scope 3: What You Sell Matters More Than How You Make It
In the past, many automakers focused their carbon reduction efforts on factory processes (Scope 1 and 2) through the use of renewable energy. However, SBTi points out that over 80% of the automotive industry’s carbon emissions stem from the "Use of Sold Products" (Scope 3).
The core shift in the new draft is that SBTi will no longer accept decarbonization commitments limited to the production phase. To achieve certification, global automakers (such as Toyota, VW, GM, etc.) must prove that their sales mix is rapidly "electrifying" and commit to a specific date after which they will stop selling new internal combustion engine (ICE) and hybrid vehicles.
⚡ Supply Chain Impacts and Opportunities
Although this standard directly regulates brand-name automakers (OEMs), the pressure will rapidly cascade down to the upstream supply chain. As a critical global hub for automotive components, Taiwan will face a highly polarized impact:
ICE Component Suppliers Face "Disruption" Risks: Suppliers of specialized parts—such as traditional engines, transmissions, and exhaust systems—could face a massive contraction in orders within the next 5 to 10 years if they lack a clear transformation plan.
EV Supply Chain Reaps the "Green Bonus": Suppliers of automotive chips, battery materials, charging infrastructure, and lightweight body structures will become high-priority "low-carbon partners" that international automakers are eager to secure through long-term strategic alliances.
