With global trends in climate change and sustainable development, the issue of sports sustainability has officially moved from advocacy to the national policy level. In 2025, the Ministry of Environment signed Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) successively with the Chinese Professional Baseball League (CPBL) and the Ministry of Sports, aiming to jointly promote green events and sustainable venues, making sports a significant force in driving public environmental awareness and the net-zero transition.
Minister of Environment Peng Chi-ming stated, "No Earth, No Baseball," expressing hope that professional baseball games can serve as the best demonstration grounds for extending sustainability concepts from the stadium to daily life. The "Love Baseball, Support Sustainability" MOU signed with the CPBL includes four specific actions, such as:
-
Circular Economy: Encouraging the use of eco-friendly yarn for jerseys and establishing mechanisms for the reuse or donation of retired equipment.
-
Low-Carbon Action: Promoting the implementation of waste sorting systems in stadiums and encouraging fans to bring their own containers or use reusable cup rental services.
-
Data Transparency: Encouraging teams to promote venue carbon inventories and carbon label applications, allowing sustainability efforts to be recorded and visible.
The subsequent signing of the "Vitality Sustainability" MOU with the Ministry of Sports further symbolizes the formal establishment of a cross-ministerial cooperation mechanism. The Ministry of Sports has explicitly stated in its organizational articles that its reason for establishment includes "implementing the value of sustainable development," pledging to jointly promote green events through "Sports Power × Environmental Power," making sustainability not just a concept, but a concrete practice that everyone can participate in.
This series of collaborations not only aligns with green event trends in the international sports arena (such as the Paris Olympics and MLB) but also provides a new focal point for Taiwanese enterprises' investment in the Social aspect of ESG.
